Interactive Whiteboard Activity
(Flipchart Lesson - Synonyms) Objective Students will reinforce awareness and knowledge of synonyms through identifying similar verbs and adjectives while building vocabulary skills. Common Core L.PK.5 With modeling and support from adults, explore word relationships and nuances in word meanings. L.PK.5a With modeling and support, sort common objects into categories (e.g., shapes, foods) to gain a sense of the concepts the categories represent. L.PK.5c Identify real-life connections between words and their use (e.g., note objects in classroom that are small). Procedure Students will drag and drop similar verbs and adjectives represented by pictures into flipchart container (through Promethean board). Accommodations This activity will work well for ELL students as it provides visuals that can help them draw meaning based on context. For the visually impaired or hard of hearing, students can sit closer to the board. The teacher can also read the options out loud so that they will not have to necessarily see the pictures to participate. For ADD/ADHD/ASD students, this activity will allow them to interact with the white board and receive mental stimulation in a form other than traditional teacher lecturing method. Assessment Teacher will assess students’ knowledge by accuracy and completion of correct synonym dragging with container activity. Below is a slideshow to give you a glimpse of the activity! Child Book Review
Children's book reviews are a fun and very different way to get a child talking about reading! Some of the MCCSS for English Language Arts (Grade 2) include: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.2.4 Tell a story or recount an experience with appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details, speaking audibly in coherent sentences. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.2.5 Create audio recordings of stories or poems; add drawings or other visual displays to stories or recounts of experiences when appropriate to clarify ideas, thoughts, and feelings. Through audio recordings, children were able to discuss two different stories, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Cabin Fever by Jeff Kinney and Young Cam Jensen & The Spotted Cat Mystery by David A. Adler. Hear the reviews on both of these books below! |

The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle
The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle is an all-time favorite children's book of mine. This book documents a caterpillar's journey through eating various foods and eventually turning into a beautiful butterfly. You can do various activities with book reviews such as making cookie cutters like the one below or a fun, Voki discussing the book which you can hear below! |
